-Raisin is a very sweet but skittish boy, with potential
wobblers. He's a total
mama's boy. He's afraid of new men, but will approach for
sniffs and pets if the man just ignores him. He tends to "police" the other dogs. For some reason he hates Boxers and will
attack them, unprovoked, on sight.
We
got
Raisin, and his buddy Drake, from a fellow rescuer. She was going
through a divorce and could not keep her dogs. He was 8 months old when
she got him off a craigslist ad from a woman in the military who was
unable to keep him. He's lived her (and Drake) ever since, going
on 4 years now. Raisin is funny about some men. He tends to be a bit
skittish of men in general, but does well with some and not so well
with others. Women he is fine with. Raisin appears to have mild
wobblers. Not so bad as to seriously affect him, but enough to make his
a little unsteady on his feet. Per his vet's direction, he is kept on a
diet to keep his weight low, which has helped reduce his symptoms, and
if needed, gets a baby aspirin once a day. He has issues with some men,
others he is fine with. He does like to run and play with his buds, but
he is also happy just hanging around the house holding the couches
down. He prefers to stay at home, even alone, than to go out on trips.
He has been just fine with all the dogs here, though if play starts
getting too rambunctious, he can turn into the police and start bossing
the other dogs around. He is pretty mellow, though he does have his
wild moments. He is well behaved and since he can see and hear, it is
easy to get his attention. He is very affectionate and can be a real
cuddle baby. He tends to take up the whole bed if you let him sleep on
the bed with you, and use you as a pillow. But he is fine with sleeping
in a nice comfy stuffed chair or a cushy dog bed, if you won't let him
sleep on the bed with you. He is a really nice dog to have around. He
does apparently have this thing about Boxers though. It seems he hates
the breed and will attack them the instant he sees them. So you do have
to be careful with him around other dogs. As long as there aren't any
Boxers around, he fine. Here's what the rescuer we got him from had to
say about him.
"Drake was neutered at around 6 months old. At
around 8 months old he was huge and still trying to play with the
dachshunds, so I decided to look for a buddy his own size to
adopt. I wasn't necessarily looking for a Dane, just sort of
looking on Petfinder and Craigslist for a large playful dog, and I
found an ad for another 8 month old Dane named Raiden. His mom
was in the military and being deployed so she was looking for a new
home for him. I took Drake over to meet him and they were instant
buddies...zoomies all over the house and yard.
Apparently Raiden is a character in a video game called Mortal Combat,
and she was a big fan of the game, so that's where his name came
from. Since he's such a big sensitive baby, I just didn't think
the tough guy name fit. But he already knew it, so I started
calling him Raisin...sounds the same but fits his dorky personality
much better. :) Raisin originally was purchased from a
breeder in Georgia for $1200. His dad was apparently a champion,
but this is all coming verbally from his former owner, so I have no
idea if it's true or not. No papers or anything on him. He
was already neutered when I got him.
He was TERRIFIED of men when we first brought him home. It took
him a few days to even let Matt near him. Typical fearful dog, he
was worse on leash since he couldn't "get away" when men approached
him. At the dog park and dog beach off leash he could just avoid
men and did fine. He was perfectly fine with new women
approaching him, and he did get a lot better with men since I took him
everywhere with me, but he was still more wary of new men than
women.
I also discovered that he is a big time doggy racist, and will attack
ANY boxer (age, sex, size does not matter) on sight. No idea why,
but he HATES boxers. It was rather embarrassing the first few
times he'd run up snarling, knock a 5 month old female boxer puppy down
and stand over her growling and snapping. He never actually drew
blood or bit...just slammed them down and didn't let them up."
Update - We had Raisin and Drake in a foster home for a few months.
Drake settled in just fine, but Raisin never accepted the husband. He
was fine with some men who visited the foster family, and has always
been fine with me and our Adoptions Coordinator's huasband, as well as
with most other men who have visited us here. But he was not going to
accept or trust the husband of the foster family for some reason. And
time did not make any difference. They kept him for several months,
hoping he would "get over it" but he never did. The husband is a nice
nice guy, a dog person, and tried his best to help Raisin. So bottom
line is Raisin is fine with some men and not with others. We do not know
what the key or trigger is. But anyone considering adopting Raisin will
need to keep this in mind. With me he has always been just a big sweet
baby, right from day one. I never had any problems with him. He
instantly trusted me.
We will post additional photos of Raisin as time goes by, so check
back often.
